humansofnewyork: Firefighters from FDNY Engine 228. When I was taking the photo, a bystander leaned in and whispered: “They aren’t even on the job. It’s their day off.” This is how most of the FDNY is, including my dad. My dad’s firehouse buddies came to Long Island to help clean up and help my family in any way that they could. They really do form this brotherhood. I guess when you risk your life with people something like that forms. They have such huge hearts. Oh and just learned- This morning, the National Guard was outside my neighbor’s house. It was filled with smoke. My dad went over to see what was going on. They said that the house was going on fire and they couldn’t go in. He ran back to our house, grabbed a fire extinguisher and barged through their front door. And saved the freaking day. Apparently, the volunteer fire fighters blew him off, but the National Guard was all like, “OMG! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!” And he’s just like, “I’m a lieutenant in the fire dept..NBD.” Heroes are all around after Sandy and proud to say my dad is one of them.
